How to Write Better Page Titles and Meta Descriptions
Updated 10/14/2026
Your page title is usually the clickable headline in search results. The meta description is often used as the snippet underneath. Neither guarantees a ranking, but both help people decide whether to click.
Page titles
- Describe what the page is about, then add your brand: "Diagnostic Imaging in Lagos | Example Clinic".
- Keep each page's title unique. FADRO's Full Website Audit flags titles shared by several pages.
- Aim for roughly 30–60 characters. Longer titles may be cut off; this is a guideline, not a rule.
Meta descriptions
- Summarise the page in one or two plain sentences, around 70–160 characters.
- Say what the visitor will find or be able to do.
- Search engines sometimes choose their own snippet text, even when a good description exists.
Example
<title>BSc Computer Science Admissions | Example University</title> <meta name="description" content="Entry requirements, deadlines and how to apply for our BSc Computer Science programme.">
